Every custom piece at Whim begins with an idea. Whether you’re bringing us a fully formed vision or just a few pieces of inspiration, we’ll work closely with you to bring it to life. Our custom process includes design revisions, curated stone sourcing, 3D renderings, and 3D-printed models, so you can see and feel your piece before it goes into production. A $500 deposit is collected to begin your custom project and is applied in full toward the final cost of your piece. From your initial inquiry to completion, custom projects typically take 10–12 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design and intricacy of the stone sourcing. We love the process of creating something that feels entirely your own, and we’re here to make every step feel thoughtful, collaborative, and distinctly Whim.
Conceptualize
Every custom piece starts with an idea. In this first step, we take the time to understand what you’re drawn to, what you want to create, and what makes the piece feel uniquely yours. Whether you arrive with a fully formed vision or just a few inspirations, we’ll explore proportions, shapes, stones, and details together to begin shaping the concept. From there, your ideas become the foundation for a one-of-a-kind piece.
Design & Revision
With the direction in place, we bring the concept to life through detailed design renderings and, when helpful, 3D-printed models. This gives you the opportunity to see, experience, and refine your piece before it enters production. We’ll work through revisions together until every detail feels just right.
Craftsmenship
The final step is where your piece truly comes to life. Each design is handcrafted by artisan jewelers in our New York City workshop, where every detail is carefully considered, hand-touched, and finished. From the first setting to the final polish, your piece passes through multiple sets of skilled hands to ensure it feels as special in person as it did on paper.

Frequently asked questions
What is the return policy?
All custom orders are final sale. Our goal is for you to feel completely confident and excited about your custom piece, which is why we take care at every stage of the process to ensure the final design meets your expectations. If you ever feel that something isn’t quite right, please reach out to us—we’ll always do our best to work with you and find a solution.
Can I reuse metal from pre-existing pieces?
We don’t reuse existing metal in new pieces, but we’re happy to give your gold a second life through project credit. Credit is based on the current daily gold market rate, adjusted for metal purity and refining fees, with 90% of the final scrap value returned to you as store credit.
Can I use stones from pre-existing pieces?
Yes, we are more than happy to work with your personal stones.
Is there a minimum project price?
There are no minimums for custom projects unless you’re providing your own stones. For client-supplied stones, custom projects begin at $1,500.
Do I need to know exactly what I want?
Not at all. Some clients come with a detailed sketch and others with a feeling or a Pinterest board. Shaping the idea together is part of the process.
How does payment work?
We’ll always provide preliminary pricing before any payment is made, so you know what to expect from the start. Once you’re ready to move forward, a $500 non-refundable deposit is required to begin the design and stone-sourcing process. Once your design is finalized, 50% of the remaining balance is due to secure your stones and begin production. The final balance is due prior to delivery or pickup. Payments can be made by wire or card.
Will I get an appraisal or certificate?
All pieces come with an official appraisal and insurance referral. All diamonds purchased through Whim are certified GIA or IGI.
